Photo Competition 2011 (Details)

DUNES invites photographers to enter its 3rd Annual Photography Competition. You must read the following rules, terms and conditions before submitting any photographs. The competition is open to all staff and students of Duke-NUS. Organizing committee members will not be eligible to enter the competition.

What to enter:
Photographs will be entered and judged under three categories (categorized based on the type of equipment/camera used to capture the photo):

1. Scientific (Laboratory) Category-Entries limited to images taken using scientific equipment (e.g. confocal and light microscope), normally in the laboratory setting.

2. Non-scientific (General) Category-Entries may include any images taken outside the laboratory using any type of compact or DSLR camera. Entries may include travel photography, street photography, nature photography (including macro shots), or portraits.

3. Camera Phone Category-Entries limited to images taken using cameras mounted on mobile phones or other mobile devices (e.g. ipad) with at least 2 megapixels resolution.

All entries must be submitted as Jpeg or Tiff only.

All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in the entries or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. Further, entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.

Prior to submission, entrants must not have offered any of their entries for sale, been paid for any publication of any of their entries or won or been a runner up in any other photographic competition with any of their entries.

Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit. By entering the competition all entrants grant to DUNES the right to publish and exhibit their photographs on the DUNES website, at the Symposium, and within the Duke-NUS building

Entrants can submit only one photograph in each category (i.e., each participant can enter a maximum of 3 entries, but only one in each category).

Images may be digitally enhanced to remove spots or scratches, cropping, but not manipulated. Entrants can enhance the picture to make it brighter, clearer etc, but not manipulate the content. DUNES and the judges reserve the right to exclude any image they believe may have been excessively treated so as to alter its authenticity.

How to enter:
Each entry should be submitted electronically with name, department/research program, and a one-line description by email: photos@dunes.sg The deadline for submission is Monday 26th September 2011.

Eligibility and Judging:
To ensure eligibility for the contest, all entries must have a resolution of 6 million pixels or greater (6 megapixels) to be made available upon request. Images that do not meet this technical requirement may still be judged but will not be shortlisted for the top prizes. This restriction does not apply to the scientific and camera-phone categories.

A panel of judges will judge all entries. They will consider a range of factors including composition, technical ability, originality, overall impact and artistic merit of the photographs.

The eligibility of entries shall be at the sole and absolute discretion of the organizers and the judges. All decisions made by the judges are final.

The winning photo:
The judges will select a shortlist of five photographs from each category for display at the DUNES Scientific Symposium on 7th October 2011.

The winner of each category will be presented their prize at the conclusion of the DUNES Scientific Symposium 2011.
